Sheet Masks: New Skincare Phenomenon

Sheet masks are a relatively new skincare phenomenon here in the United States. Last year, Sephora released an array of Korean skincare products and also promoted a beauty regimen representative of how many Korean women care for their skin. This regimen includes a lot of water-based, hydrating products which tend to give the skin a radiant and dewy glow. This dewy finish is now what many cosmetic brands are promoting through products such as the cushion foundation, and hydrating setting sprays which are traditionally staple items in Korean beauty and skincare. Thanks to this influx to Korean beauty products, we have items such as sheet masks, essences, sleeping packs, cleansing balms/oils, mists and other items which all work to promote youthful, hydrated, glowing skin.

Sheet masks have now become an essential item in any skincare regimen whether you’re an oily girl, or whether you have normal to dry skin. No matter your skin issues, there is a sheet mask out there for you! And now, you can find sheet masks pretty much anywhere. I’ve seen them in Forever 21 near the checkout line as well as in Target which means you don’t have to pay a fortune to try out this new skincare item.

What are they?

Sheet masks are thin masks usually made of either fiber, pulp, hydro-gel or bio cellulose. They typically come in the shape of a full face with cut outs on the eye, nose and mouth areas. There are also sheet masks for specific areas such as under the eye, lips, and even hands and feet! Sheet masks are usually drenched in a serum which works to provide a high level of hydration and nutrients to the skin as well as keep the masks moist.

How to use them?

Apply the sheet mask to your face or other specified area and leave on for 15-20 minutes depending on the directions of that particular mask. Once finished with the mask, remove and smooth the serum in to your skin.

Sheet masks are an awesome skincare item not only because they are effective, but also because they are super easy to use. They typically come individually packaged which is super convenient for travel. Also, no water or rinsing is required for these masks. Simply slip them on, relax, take them off and go. You will be left with refreshed, moisturized and hydrated skin.

Sheet masks are also great because there is a mask for every skin type and issue. You can even purchase a large pack of sheet masks, each one containing a different skin treatment. For example, I bought a large pack of TonyMoly (very popular Korean Skincare Brand) sheet masks and each one does something different for my skin. One is for elasticity, another is for pore care, another is for brightening…etc. Therefore this is a really useful skincare item to have.

These masks are also very refreshing and relaxing- perfect after a long day at work. If you’re like me, you don’t often feel like going through an entire skin care regimen after a long day especially if that involves having to put on a mask that you have to eventually rinse off. With these masks, you can slip them on after you get out of the shower and clean up, cook dinner and them simply take the mask off and throw it away; no rinsing necessary.

They’re also very affordable as opposed to other high-end facial masks and treatments. Now of course, the higher end brands have come out with their own lines of sheet masks, however you don’t need to break the bank when it comes to purchasing these masks. I bought this pack of 11 TonyMoly Sheet Masks from Amazon for about $10 bucks- that’s less than $1 a mask!

Sephora also has their own line of sheet masks for the face, lips, eyes, hands and feet which are pretty affordable as well. If you’re looking for a place to purchase these sheet masks on the ground, I would recommend Ulta or Sephora-they have a large selection of sheet masks both affordable and high-end.
