So you may have heard of NCLA—they’re a luxury nail company best known for their modern and uniquely patterned nail wraps. They also have nail polishes and have recently released NCLA Gelous–their new line of gel nail polishes! Now, I’m pretty obsessed with gel polish not only because of the lasting shine you receive, but also for the durability of the manicure which will typically last about two weeks. So, I was very excited to find out about the NCLA Gelous line and I immediately ordered a few polishes to try out. I ordered the color “Volume IV” which is a very light brown nude as well as “On Sundays We Brunch” which is a nude pink cream color.

I did not purchase the NCLA gelous base and top coat, but instead used the Shellac base and top coat that I already had at home. You can use pretty much any gel base and top coat, although there is no tacky layer to remove when using the full NCLA gelous system. I have had no issue with using a different base and top coat, but I will likely invest in NCLA’s full system once I run out of the base and topcoats I have.
You may also use an LED light or a UV light. I purchased a UV light from amazon several years ago, although it is no longer in stock. I will link another good UV light from Amazon here. You can also use an LED light which cures gel polish faster.
Make sure your nail is completely dry and dehydrated to allow the polish to adhere properly to your nail. In order to do this, wipe your nail with alcohol before you apply your base coat.
I used my UV light to cure the base coat first (2 minutes) and then the color (2 minutes). I applied two separate coats of color (curing in between coats) and this gave me great color payoff. I recommend using thin coats of polish- this allows for the longest lasting gel manicure. I then cured the top coat for 3 minutes to ensure the polish was fully cured. Since I did not use NCLA’s top coat, I needed to remove the tacky layer from my nail (with alcohol) after the top coat was finished curing. Once I did that, I was left with a shiny, sturdy manicure.
If applied correctly, this manicure should definitely last a solid two weeks. I have not tested it for 3 weeks as I do not ever wear my nail polish for that long. However, I believe this manicure could last that long if you wanted it to.
Taking this polish off is fairly easy. As with any other gel polish, you need to gently file the top of your nail to break up the top layer of gel, then apply acetone-soaked cotton balls to your nails and wrap them with foil. Leave your nails wrapped for at least 15 minutes. After removing the foil and cotton ball, you should be able to easily remove the gel polish with a cuticle pusher or nail buffer.
I have tried a number of different gel polishes from OPI to Shellac to IBD and I have found that NCLA’s gel polishes are by far the easiest to buy online and they also have the healthiest formula for your natural nails. NCLA offers a wide variety of modern colors which is great when it comes to gel polish. The quality and pigment of the polishes are very nice and you do not need to apply more than two coats to get the perfect color. Considering the quality and variety of these polishes, I would most definitely recommend them. They run for $21 each which is relatively practical when it comes to gel polishes. If you’ve never tried gel polish before or if you’re in the market for a new set of polishes, NCLA offers an easy to follow system and a wide selection of polishes to choose from. If you haven’t tried them, I would highly recommend it!
