Girlboss: How to Take Charge of Your Life

Lately, I’ve been really focusing on ways to self-improve, be more effective and live a more purposeful life. I’m sure everyone has heard of the new GirlBoss hashtag going around, although there is real substance in this idea. There are some very practical things we can do to be more effective in our daily routines and to enjoy life more. In effort to do this, I’ve made adjustments to my schedule, my work and way of thinking. I’ve been experiencing a lot of great changes and progress in my life and along with that, I feel that I need to reflect on the things I’ve done and still need to do to remain successful.

Becoming a GirlBoss: Feeling behind?

Last year, I felt as though my life was moving forward without me in the driver’s seat. I was stuck in the same rhythm of getting up, going to work, coming home, watching tv and then going to bed. I did that over and over again everyday and I felt as though I was not living up to my potential. Even though the job I had was a pretty good one, I did not feel satisfied with it. I did not feel content with what I was putting into the world or into myself. I wasn’t doing anything meaningful in other people’s lives or in my own. While a few things happened that forced me to re-analyze my entire life (for another blog post), I am glad they happened because they made me re-evaluate what I’m doing with my time.

Time is so important and if you don’t reflect on how your spending it, it will pass you by very quickly. I found time disappearing on me and I wasn’t doing anything with it. Therefore after some major changes, I started to re-vamp my routine and my career. First, I started blogging which is something I’ve always wanted to do and it has revitalized my life in so many ways. I also created a new routine for myself which included getting up early, exercising, working on my blog, being organized, and inspiring myself. Therefore if you want to become a girlboss, or just begin to take charge of your life and enjoy it to the fullest, you will need to make some substantive changes to your routine.

How to Take Charge of Your Life and be a GirlBoss

Below are some tips that I have used to take charge of my life, be healthy, enjoy what I do and become a GIRLBOSS. Enjoy!

  1. Wake up Early- This is the first step in taking charge of your life and really being effective everyday. We say all of the time that there’s not enough time in the day, but there is! We just don’t utilize it. I used to wait until the very last minute to wake up for work. Now, I go to bed early (making sure I get at least 8 hrs) and I wake up early (at least 5am). I find that I can be the most effective in the morning if I get a jump-start on my day. Therefore first things first, I drink some water, put on my exercise clothes and break a sweat for about 25 minutes. Then, I work on my blog, shower, and get ready for work. Since I started waking up early, I have been so much more efficient and energetic. Try it, it works!girlboss
  2. Create a Schedule- This step is extremely important if you really want to be successful in whatever you do. Creating a schedule for myself is how I make sure that I’m getting things done. Therefore I have a set schedule for my mornings and my evenings. In the morning, I set aside an hour to work on my blog and then get ready for my full time job. In the evening, I make sure to relax and go to bed early. I also make sure to write things down in my planner so that I am not forgetting things I have to do. I love to be able to check these things off at the end of the day.                                                       girlboss
  3. Trash in, Trash Out! Staying healthy is extremely important if you want to be effective, have energy and enjoy life. Therefore don’t go on diet after diet. Instead, create a lifestyle change. Change your lifestyle and the way you think about food and health. Since I started paying attention to what I eat, I have so much more energy and I physically feel better. When you put good things in your body, you feel better and you have the energy to do more. Also, exercising is very important. Now, I am not naturally an athletic person. So exercising is not something I find enjoyable, although through consistent practice, I have learned to appreciate it and enjoy working up a sweat. It makes me feel healthier, more energetic and relaxed. This in turn, helps me to be more effective in my daily life.                                   girlboss
  4. Inspire Yourself! This step probably should have come first. Before I felt the need to make all of these changes, I had to put things in  my mind that inspired me to be more and do more. This means taking information in that pushes you to think differently and inspires you to be a better individual. I do this by reading inspirational books, as well as watching inspiring podcasts and lifestyle videos on YouTube. Right now, I am reading Battlefield of the Mind, a daily devotional written by Christian Author and Speaker, Joyce Meyer. This book challenges me to think about the right things and to fight against worry, doubt, confusion and other issues that can impede your ability to move forward in life. Devotionals are a great way to change your thinking and start the day off in a positive way. I am also reading the book Think & Grow Rich, which not only teaches you how to live a successful life monetarily, but it also teaches you how to think for success and plan your life with a purpose. With the tools in the book, you can be successful at anything. If you’re a person who’s afraid to take risks or put yourself out there, I would recommend the book Big Magic: Creative Living Beyond Fear. This book teaches you how to connect with your creative side and also gain the courage to do the things that bring you joy. I also read my bible regularly and meditate on scriptures that apply to my life or particular things I’m dealing with. There are infinite resources out there that can get you inspired. Therefore I suggest taking a break from Facebook, Instagram and Snap Chat to find those resources and put things into your mind that will inspire you and challenge your thinking. Remember, you want to be a person who lives life intentionally and with a purpose!

I hope you enjoyed this post and found it helpful in living a more intentional, purposeful life. The whole point of making these changes is really to enjoy your life to the fullest. You don’t want to get stuck in a passionless routine for years, only to look back and wish you had done more. Therefore take the time to reflect, improve your routine, and inspire yourself! Oh yeah, and be a GirlBoss!
